Abstract
Lorsqu'on ajoute au fer des quantités de chrome en proportion croissante, on constate que la résistance à la corrosion atmosphérique augmente rapidement avec la teneur en chrome et devient pratiquement stable lorsqu'on dépasse environ 12 p. 100 de chrome. On note un phénomène similaire pour la résistance à l'oxydation à chaud dans l'air. Cette inoxydabilité provient paradoxalement de l'extrême affinité du chrome pour l'oxygène, et il se forme en surface du métal un film passif protecteur que nous étudierons plus en détail dans la partie relative à la corrosion.
