Abstract
Abstract This chapter demonstrates that the way in which research ethics guidance documents and research ethics committees calculate the potential benefits and risks of research is fundamentally flawed, insofar as they fail to account for the indirect risks to human health posed by the carbon footprint of health research. It then provides the ethical underpinnings and a way forward for researchers, funders, and research ethics committees to equitably address the carbon footprint of health research. This approach entails (1) minimizing the carbon footprint of health research, (2) calculating and disclosing the carbon footprint of research, and (3) purchasing carbon offsets to ensure that research is net-zero. While some may worry that such an approach might prevent important health research from taking place, when implemented correctly such an approach is likely to minimize research waste, raise ethical and scientific standards, and promote promising health research.
