Abstract
Abstract Healthcare systems have ethical responsibilities to advance social justice, while minimizing environmental and ecological injustice. Sustainable health care has emerged as a way for healthcare systems to uphold their ethical responsibilities and includes (amongst other things) designing new facilities and upgrading existing facilities so that their environmental impacts are minimized. For that reason, healthcare facilities in many countries are increasingly being designed or renovated according to green building frameworks. But how well do green building frameworks promote social justice, while avoiding and addressing environmental and ecological injustice? The chapter first examines what the duty to promote social justice, while minimizing environmental and ecological injustice, requires in more detail. The chapter then returns to the matter of sustainable healthcare building design. It describes the concept of green design and its translation into green building frameworks and analyses whether and how six green building frameworks advance social justice and minimize environmental and ecological injustice. The chapter demonstrates that the capacity of green building frameworks to promote social justice and to minimize environmental harm could be strengthened. It concludes by offering recommendations for revising them to better advance socio-ecological justice.
