Abstract
Abstract Environmental justice (EJ) research, scholarship, and advocacy focuses on interactions that directly affect the distribution of human health, such as waste disposal; pollution control; exposure to pesticides and toxic chemicals; occupational health and safety; housing and urban development; energy production and utilization; agriculture; genetically modified organisms; healthcare technology and infrastructure; and climate change. While many people support the idea of EJ as a moral and political goal worthy of pursuit, they often disagree about specific policies used to achieve this goal, which suggests that people disagree about the meaning of EJ, the methods needed to bring it about, or both. The chapter examines the philosophical, political, and scientific foundations of EJ, describes some types of EJ issues, and discusses some strategies for resolving EJ issues.
