Abstract
Abstract This introductory chapter summarises the study’s main conceptual and theoretical contributions and situates it within broader academic debates in international law, political science, and conflict studies. First, the book develops a novel typology to capture different positions on diplomatic state recognition and how international organisations facilitate their collective expression. The typology is then used to develop and probe a series of new theoretical claims about how collective recognition shapes the approaches of international organisations to statehood claimants without general recognition, like Kosovo, Palestine, and Timor-Leste, which are important for a better understanding of international involvement in conflict-ridden areas. Finally, an innovative ‘dynamic sovereignty’ thesis is developed, whereby statehood-associated conditions like diplomatic recognition fluctuate over time and where the borders of international society are fuzzier than they might first appear. The chapter also outlines key concepts and methods of data collection and analysis, and provides a roadmap for the rest of the book.
