Abstract
Abstract This book draws from the political thought of José Ortega y Gasset (1883–1955) to examine how liberal responses to loss can inspire reactionary and illiberal politics. Following an overview of Ortega’s life and political reception, this chapter introduces the problem of imperial loss and describes the book’s central interventions: first, that imperial loss can reshape the aims and internal logics of liberal thought; second, that imperial commitments can drive liberal critiques of democracy, including contemporary phenomena like populism; and finally, that anxieties over imperial loss can blur the boundaries between liberal and fascist political ideas. The chapter concludes with an overview of the arguments developed in the book’s subsequent chapters.
