Abstract
Abstract This chapter introduces the dilemma of democratic self-defence and situates the book within broader debates about how democracies should respond to antidemocratic challenges. It directs attention to the question of what democracy defenders seek to defend, a problem complicated by the contested nature of democracy. It also examines who counts as an antidemocratic actor and who can be regarded as a defender of democracy. In contrast to concepts such as democratic resilience and democratic survival, the paradigm of democratic self-defence places greater emphasis on the agency of those who threaten democracy and those who seek to defend it. The chapter then outlines the book’s methodological approach. The three frameworks developed in this book are conceived as action-guiding, norm-driven frameworks and analysed comparatively as ideal types. In lieu of advancing a normative argument in favour of a particular response, the book reconstructs, evaluates and compares these ideal types.
