Abstract
Abstract The conclusion draws out the book’s broader implications for understanding liberalism, fascism, and democracy, and for assessing how the political dynamics of imperial collapse reshape all three. It first shows how later Falangist claims to embody a form of “liberal fascism” reflect both the enduring influence of Ortega’s thought and the degree to which liberalism and imperialism became interchangeable political logics for fascist thinkers. It then considers Ortega’s place within ongoing debates about the history of liberalism, particularly in relation to Cold War narratives that cast early twentieth-century liberalism as complicit in the emergence of totalitarianism. Finally, the conclusion turns to contemporary anxieties about far-right populism and illiberalism, suggesting that Ortega’s ultimately unsuccessful efforts to diagnose and contain such phenomena the wake of Spain’s imperial eclipse may help us think more carefully—and more cautiously—about the contemporary problem of populist “masses.”
