Abstract
Associate Professor, Department of Political Science and International Studies The starting point of my interest in collective recognition and sovereignty, and, in a way, of this study, was, as often happens with research, a much more specific instance: my doctoral studies on the role of the European Union in northern Cyprus as an example of how international organisations treat unrecognised states. Back then, I identified exploring the role of international organisations in recognition and, more generally, in conflict as a promising research avenue following that study. Eventually, this culminated in my successful (after a few failed attempts…) application to the Leverhulme Early Career Fellowships. The Fellowship gave me crucial support to complete the study presented in this book, and I am thankful to the Leverhulme Trust and to the University of Birmingham, particularly POLSIS and the School of Government, for generously supporting my research. I am especially thankful to Stefan Wolff, who became my mentor during my Fellowship and has supported me since.
