Abstract
Abstract Chapter 7 offers a critical evaluation of some prominent existing alternatives to the account pursued in previous chapters. These are accounts that, like the one approached in this book, appear motivated by a desire to identify intermediate stages in the evolution of linguistic communication. At least some of these alternatives are also motivated, like the present account, by dissatisfaction with the Gricean Communicative Intentions approach. The main aim of this chapter is to evaluate a representative sample of such alternatives, as well as to highlight some of the main differences in emphasis and orientation between them and the intermediate account developed in the present work. Doing so should allow the reader to get a sense of how to regard other extant accounts that have been left out of the discussion here.
