Abstract
This chapter examines the principles and structures that underpin effective investigation management, and it emphasises that organised processes, robust governance, and strategic oversight enhance investigative success and safeguard justice. It outlines governance frameworks, clarifies the role of the (P)GSB, and establishes an Overarching Investigative Strategy that integrates major incident rooms, allocates appropriate resources, and defines enquiry team roles. The chapter defines aims, objectives, and terms of reference, and it explains how investigators prioritise lines of enquiry, manage information flow, and maintain clear and consistent communication across complex operations. It describes action management systems, situation reporting, and handover procedures, and it promotes organisational learning alongside the careful use of artificial intelligence to support efficiency and decision-making. Finally, the chapter addresses disclosure obligations and demonstrates that disciplined management, transparent processes, and continuous evaluation ensure accountability, reduce error, and maintain investigative integrity.
