Abstract
This chapter examines communication in investigations, outlining how Senior Investigating Officers coordinate audiences, apply verbal, non-verbal, and writing skills, and manage interactions to support leadership and governance. It explains investigative communication channels, including briefings, meetings, and debriefings, and prescribes disciplined practices such as clear agendas, inclusive participation, time control, and precise language to enhance clarity and authority. The chapter details the conduct of meetings, briefings, and debriefings, emphasising preparation, accurate information exchange, structured handovers, and systematic learning capture to improve decision-making and operational performance. It also addresses report writing and media management, recognising that rapid information flows and public scrutiny require consistent messaging, credibility, and pro-active narrative control. Finally, the chapter synthesises these practices to show how effective communication strengthens investigations, supports accountability, builds trust, and mitigates risks arising from miscommunication and unmanaged publicity.
