Abstract
This chapter examines the investigation of suspicious deaths and homicide, defining key roles, responsibilities, and procedures that guide professional and accountable practice. It categorises types of death, analyses equivocal cases, emphasises preservation of life, and explains methods for determining the time, cause, and manner of death through medical and forensic evidence. The chapter outlines the role of forensic pathology, clarifies the functions of coroners and legal frameworks, and describes the organisation of tactical meetings, scene assessment, and systematic evidence recovery. It details processes for body removal, identification, post-mortem examination, and specialist involvement, while addressing contexts such as healthcare settings, domestic homicide, exhumations, and deaths occurring overseas. Finally, the chapter demonstrates how investigators apply structured decision-making, multidisciplinary coordination, and ethical standards to manage risk, preserve evidence, and establish accurate conclusions in complex death investigations.
