Abstract
This chapter outlines the foundational principles of crime scene management, emphasising Locard’s exchange principle and the need to identify, secure, and protect scenes to preserve evidential integrity and admissibility. It details systematic assessment processes, defines the roles of the Senior Investigating Officer and Crime Scene Manager, and explains coordinated strategies for searches, cordons, access control, and contamination prevention across varied environments. The chapter explains intelligence-led physical search planning, including the functions of PolSA, PolSC, and PST, and emphasises rigorous documentation through logs, plans, images, and audit trails to maintain the continuity and integrity of exhibits. It addresses exhibit handling, labelling, prioritisation, forensic management reviews, legal powers of entry and warrants, and the controlled release of scenes following thorough examination. Finally, the chapter identifies health and safety risks, prescribes risk assessments and protective measures, and integrates multidisciplinary coordination to maximise evidential recovery and support investigative outcomes.
