Abstract
This chapter explains investigative strategies, methods, and tactics within an overarching investigation strategy, showing how objectives, evidential requirements, risks, and intelligence gaps shape proportionate, dynamic, and accountable decision-making. It outlines strategy implementation through structured actions, version-controlled documentation, and Policy Logs, emphasising supervisory ownership, continuous review, and integration across complementary approaches to ensure coherent investigative activity. The chapter examines house-to-house enquiries, including parameter setting, fast-track and phased approaches, questioning techniques, community engagement, and coordination, demonstrating their role in identifying suspects, witnesses, victims, and evidential material. It analyses passive data, CCTV, communications, digital evidence, financial investigation, pro-active investigation, and specialist support, highlighting rapid seizure, legal compliance, attribution, and analytical integration alongside specialist roles. Finally, the chapter emphasises that effective investigations require coordinated strategies, rigorous documentation, continual review, lawful practice, and integrated intelligence and digital capabilities to guide decision-making, mitigate risk, and secure reliable evidential outcomes.
