Abstract
Abstract This chapter traces Catarina Kinnvall’s intellectual journey into political psychology, beginning with her research on political learning and democratization in post-Tiananmen China. She shifts from cognitive and foreign policy theories to feminist, postcolonial, and psychoanalytical approaches, especially in her work on nationalism, identity, and ontological security. Kinnvall constructs a gendered Lacanian framework to examine how anxiety, trauma, and emotion shape political behavior, focusing on populism, migration, climate denial, and the COVID-19 pandemic. By weaving together psychoanalysis, poststructuralism, and global narratives, her work challenges rationalist, individualistic, and Western-centric models in political psychology. Finally, the chapter calls for a relational, inclusive, and postpositivist political psychology that embraces diverse methodologies and centers on structural, emotional, and unconscious dynamics in political life.
