Abstract
Sometime in the summer of 1971, I went to the beach with my friend Ruth. We had both just finished our third year of graduate school at the University of Chicago and the conversation turned to an evaluation of what we then naively believed was the end of our education. Ruth’s father was an academic, and Ruth always thought in more professional terms than I did, frequently asking me what it meant to become a famous political scientist and what I thought I would contribute to the discipline. The question always baffled me. I had no such lofty ambitions. I was merely trying to get through one set of courses in one particular quarter. I gave no thought to whatever was at the end of it all. I never asked myself whether I might make a scholarly contribution, had no idea of what it meant to be a scientist, let alone a great one, and certainly never thought of myself as a role model for anyone.
