Abstract
Abstract The objectives of this study were to compare commercial protein and energy products with the newly developed value-added blended fat stimulated feed product (BFSFP) on intestinal and total track organic matter digestion in ruminants. Three-batches samples of the newly developed value-added blended fat stimulated feed products BFSFP1, BFSFP2 and BFSFP3 were developed. The only difference among the three BFSFP tested was batch. Three samples of barley grain (n = 3) and canola meal (n = 3) were obtained from Canadian Feed Research Center (CFRC, University of Saskatchewan, Canada). Intestinal and total track organic matter digestion in lactating dairy cattle were determined using three-step approach. The treatment design was a one-way structure with three feed treatment levels (i = 1 (BFSFP), 2 (Barley), 3 (canola meal). The experimental design was a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with the feed treatments as a fixed effect (i = 1 (BFSFP, n = 3), 2 (Barley, n = 3), 3 (canola meal, n = 3) and the experimental runs as a random block effect. The results showed that compared with commercially available energy-rich and protein-rich feeds, the newly developed BFSFP was lower in the intestinal digestibility of rumen bypass OM (%dBOM) than protein rich feed of canola meal and but higher than energy rich feed of barley grain (53.0% vs. 60.0% vs. 44.5%, P < 0.01). It also had higher the intestinal digestible rumen bypass OM content (IDBOM) than barley grain (227 vs. 173 g/kg DM, P < 0.01) but higher than the protein rich feed of canola meal (256 g/kg DM). For total tract digestible OM (TDOM in g/kg DM), the newly developed BFSFP was lower (P < 0.01) than canola meal but higher (P < 0.01) than barley grain (738 vs. 757 vs. 763 g/kg DM, respectively). In conclusion, the BFSFP differs in intestinal and total track organic matter digestion compared to the commercially available energy-rich and protein-rich feeds.
