Abstract
Abstract This chapter provides a foundational account of artificial intelligence for the book’s later analysis of key concepts of insurance and insurance law. It traces AI’s development from Turing and early expert systems to modern machine learning, deep learning, reinforcement learning, and general-purpose generative models, while distinguishing narrow AI, AGI, and ASI. It explains core AI techniques, the lifecycle of AI systems from data collection to post-deployment monitoring, and the main risks arising at each stage, including bias, opacity, hallucinations, security failures, deployment error, and feedback loops. The chapter also highlights the central role of data quality and governance, and surveys emerging standards and regulatory frameworks, particularly the EU AI Act, ISO/IEC standards, and the NIST AI Risk Management Framework. Overall, it argues that understanding AI’s technical architecture is essential for assessing accountability, liability, and the evolving role of insurance in managing AI-related harms.
