Abstract
Abstract Rare earth elements and their supply chains have become both a symbol and material manifestation of China’s renewed imperial ambitions, one crystalizing Western geopolitical anxieties. This chapter briefly sums-up the history of China’s dominance of this sector, especially in terms of processing and manufacturing, and discusses attempts to break it thorugh by firms and governments in Australia, Canada, and the US, including the Mountain Pass mine, to establish integrated supply chains stretching from mining to rare earths product manufacturing. The chapter also explores the social and environmental impacts of rare earths mining in Myanmar, where much of the closed-down informal Chinese mining ventures have relocated companies following stricter implementation of environmental standards within China.
