Abstract
Abstract This chapter exposes the exploitative character of cobalt mining in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and the responses of brand companies, including ‘responsible sourcing’ initiatives, ranging from cooperatives tasked with ensuring safer work conditions and a fairer distribution of revenues. It suggests that artisanal cobalt mining has been at best mostly approached by dominant powers as a mining exploration machine, a cheap source of supply, and the object of lucrative responsible sourcing contracts and PR material. At worst, it has been quietly conceived of and dealt with as a problem of surplus population, symbolized by child miners standing in the way of a clean green transition and its promise of limitless growth powered through long lasting cobalt-based batteries.
