Abstract
Abstract Wind power is often imagined as a post-extractive, environmentally friendly, and conflict-free source of energy. By greatly reducing carbon emissions while enabling the co-existence of multiple land and offshore uses, wind power is cast as the most benign and efficient way to harness renewable energy. This chapters looks at critiques that, in contrast, describe it as a ‘murderous energy’ extracted by “wind factories” through racialized processes of dispossession. Building on cases from Britanny and La Guarija in Colombia, the chapter suggests that while wind power offers one of the best options for renewable energy provision, but the current acceleration risks further increasing tensions between developers and affected communities, many of which see little concrete benefits in comparison to the major rents that these projects generate.
