Abstract
Abstract Topic Benign Disease: Esophageal Surgery Background Esophageal submucosal tumors, including leiomyomas and gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs), are typically treated with minimal invasive enucleation. However, the technical difficulties of thoracoscopic suturing pose challenges. Enucleation of esophageal submucosal tumor using the Robotic-Assisted Thoracic Surgery (RATS) platform is considered effective in overcoming these challenges. This study shares our experience with RATS for esophageal submucosal tumors. Methods From 2010 to 2023, we analyzed intraoperative data and perioperative outcomes of 33 patients diagnosed with esophageal submucosal tumors who underwent enucleation using RATS in single center. Results Among 33 patients, 20(60.6%) cases of leiomyoma, 7(21.2%) cases of GSITs, 3(9.1%) cases of schwannoma, and 3(9.1%) cases categorized as other types were confirmed. The median mass size was 4 (5-6) cm. The predominant surgical approach was right-sided in 27(81.8%) cases. The median surgical duration was 113 (77-151) minutes. Mucosal injury was observed in 4(12.1%) cases during surgery. The median postoperative hospital stay was 4 days. No postoperative mortality was reported. Postoperative complications were identified in only one patient, which was a postoperative esophageal leak and required conservative treatment. Conclusion The application of RATS enucleation for esophageal submucosal benign tumors has indicated favorable outcomes in terms of technical feasibility and effectiveness.
