Abstract
Abstract Purpose As artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) approaches continue to be implemented in fields such as clinical neuropsychology, it is important to consider these methods for the unique field of sports neuropsychology. This study sought to identify various ways that AI and ML can be used in the identification and treatment of concussions in athletes from a neuropsychological perspective. Data Selection A comprehensive literature review was conducted using EBSCOhost and Google Scholar, where the following keywords were entered: (AI or artificial intelligence or machine learning) AND sports AND neuropsychology. While many results focused on AI and ML in the field of clinical neuropsychology, fewer results focused on sports neuropsychology and on the identification or treatment of concussion in athletes. Data Synthesis AI and ML were found to be effective in predicting post-concussion symptom recovery in adolescents and adults. Specifically, ML is effective in predicting recovery timelines for those with sports-related concussions and in aiding the diagnosis of concussed athletes. AI can also be useful for training post-concussion soccer players and for predicting the risk of future concussions in hockey players. Conclusions AI and ML approaches in sports neuropsychology can be effective and useful for both children and adults in the identification and treatment of sports-related concussions. While current research in the field is limited, making it hard to generalize these findings to all populations, future research should examine the use of AI and ML across a more geographically diverse population and across a variety of athletic activities and sports.
