Abstract
Abstract Purpose Investigating sport-related concussion (SRC) history, characteristics, and treatment among community Irish Rugby Union players. Method Community Rugby Union teams (7 male, 4 female, n=420 players) from the All-Ireland League during the 2024-25 and 2025-26 season, who participated in the Irish Rugby Injury Surveillance national injury surveillance programme, were invited to participate. Players completed a survey at pre-season including demographic information, concussion history, loss of consciousness (LOC) frequency, and treatments following SRC. Results Data were collected from 179 players. History of a diagnosed SRC was reported by 45.2% (n=81) of players, with 40.7% (n=33) players reporting LOC following at least one SRC injury. Prior lack of concussion reporting or formal diagnosis were reported in 33.5% (n=60) of players. Among players with a previous concussion, 74.1% (n=60) reported receiving treatment. The most common treatment providers were physio/athletic/sports therapists (66.7%, n=40), followed by team physicians (28.3%, n=17), and primary care physicians (23.3%, n=14). The most common treatments provided were physical rest (80.0%, n=48), the Irish Rugby Football Union Gradual Return-to-Play Protocol (61.7%, n=37), and cognitive rest (56.7%, n=34). Conclusions History of SRC was commonly reported among players. While players reported a high rate of LOC following SRC, healthcare providers should consider all SRC signs and symptoms when providing pitchside care. Although three in four players reported receiving treatment following SRC, physical rest was the predominant treatment. It is imperative that healthcare providers engaged in SRC care within this cohort become familiar with evidence-based best practices for SRC care and treatment to enhance player welfare and safety.
