Abstract
Abstract Purpose Structured concussion management programs are standard for collegiate athletes, yet non-athlete students often lack coordinated access to evidence-based care. This gap contributes to prolonged recovery, as known modifiers of concussion include symptom severity, delayed diagnosis, and limited treatment access. The Jefferson Concussion Access for Recovery, Exercise, and Support (CARES) is a novel program that addresses disparities in concussion management for non-athlete students while embedding prospective research within clinical care. Method Jefferson CARES is an interdisciplinary point-of-care pathway integrating academic specialists, athletic trainers, healthcare providers, physical therapists, and neuropsychologists. It models the Sport as a Laboratory Assessment Model (SLAM), implemented for the first time in non-athlete students. Students diagnosed with concussion at the University’s emergency department or student health center can enroll. Notifications automatically trigger 1) time-limited academic adjustments, 2) referral for supervised subsymptom threshold exercise, and 3) referral to specialty services based on predefined clinical thresholds. Participants complete daily symptom monitoring via text message to support self-management and capture recovery data. Students with symptoms persisting beyond 10 days receive standardized follow-up care. Results Jefferson CARES establishes an integrated clinical-research program that standardizes post-concussion care for college students with automated communication and rapid access to specialists and academic supports. The program captures intervention timing, symptom trajectories, and recovery duration to evaluate care timeliness and risk factors for persisting symptoms. Conclusions Jefferson CARES is a replicable model promoting equitable access to evidence-based concussion care while generating prospective clinical data to inform concussion incidence, symptoms, and recovery.
