Abstract
Abstract Purpose To further explore concussion recovery in youth with autism spectrum disorder(ASD) compared with neurotypical(NT) and attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder(ADHD) peers. Method Participants were 95 youth (m age=14.1(3.0); 65% male) seen for two visits. ASD(n=26), ADHD(n=30), and NT(n=39) groups were matched on age, sex, and year of visit(+/-1). Patients and parents completed the Post-Concussion Symptom Inventory (PCSI-2); changes in baseline adjusted (RAPID) scores between first and second visits were examined through repeated measures ANCOVAs, controlling for days since injury. Results There were significant overall symptom improvements (V1 to V2) for all parent and child subscales (p<.05). Physical symptoms improved the most by parent and child report (partial eta = .37; partial eta = .38, respectively). There were no between group differences on parent symptom subscale ratings (ns), such that symptom improvements were equivalent for each cohort. There were between group differences for child-reported fatigue, as NT and ADHD cohorts improved from V1 to V2 (p<.05), but not ASD cohort (p=.411). There was also a group by visit interaction for self-reported emotional symptoms (F=3.5, p=.04, partial eta = .09), where the NT cohort reported improved symptoms from V1 to V2, but not for ADHD and ASD, with ASD emotional symptoms increasing some (ns). Conclusions Parent perception of symptom recovery was similar in all symptom domains in NT, ADHD, and ASD cohorts. Kids with ASD reported more recovery challenges with emotional and fatigue symptoms. Emotional symptoms may be a particularly unique and important target for concussion treatment in kids with ASD.
