Abstract
Abstract Purpose We pilot tested a concise neuropsychological battery developed for use in sports neuropsychology consultations. Five tests from the NIH Toolbox Cognition Battery (NIHTB-CB v3) were selected for (a) clinical usefulness, (b) practical, patient-centered face validity, (c) brevity, and (d) ease of use. Method Participants included 16 individuals who were evaluated in a multidisciplinary sports concussion specialty clinic and referred for neuropsychological consultation, within 30 days of injury. Five tests from the NIHTB-CB were administered to assess (a) vocabulary (Picture Vocabulary Test; PVT), (b) learning and memory (Rey Auditory Verbal Learning Test), (c) processing speed (Oral Symbol Digit Test; OSD), (d) cognitive flexibility (Dimensional Change Card Sort Test), and (e) sustained attention and inhibitory control (Flanker Inhibitory Control and Attention Test). Patients rated the intensity of their headache, nausea, dizziness, and mental fogginess before and after testing. Results Their mean age was 16.9 years (SD=3.0), 68.8% were male, and their mean time since injury was 16.8 days (SD=7.4). Their mean Post-Concussion Symptom Scale total score was 43.7 (SD=24.8). Their mean PVT score was 102.88 (SD=11.48). Their two lowest mean scores were on the OSD (M=91.50, SD=12.14) and the RAVLT (M=94.00, SD=12.18). Several patients experienced temporary exacerbation of symptoms during testing. Conclusions These preliminary findings support the feasibility and usefulness of this brief neuropsychological battery during sports neuropsychology consultations. The battery is self-scoring, enabling immediate in-session discussion of the results. Symptom ratings can be obtained before and after testing to determine whether mental exertion and screen time trigger or worsen symptoms.
