Abstract
Abstract Purpose To evaluate public health perceptions of concussion treatment and long-term effects in relation to demographic characteristics. Method 3152 participants completed a cross-sectional, online survey that included demographics (e.g., age, sex, parental status, sports history), as well as perceptions of concussion treatments and long-term effects. Descriptive statistics were calculated for all items. Chi-square (${\chi}^2$) analyses were used to evaluate associations among demographics and perceptions, and to inform stepwise logistic regressions (LR) for dichotomous survey items and multinomial LRs for items with multiple categories. Results Most respondents reported one or more misperceptions regarding concussion treatment including that individuals should stay awake for 24 hours after a concussion (59.7%, N=1816), and that concussions are life-threatening (74.1%, N=2249). Respondents with a history of participation in sports (OR=1.69, 95% CI, 1.36-2.09, p<0.001) or experience playing contact sports (OR=1.37, 95% CI, 1.11-1.69, p=0.004) were more likely to believe that if someone has a concussion and are treated fully, they are still at a higher risk of re-injury. Respondents were also more likely to believe that a concussion has lifelong effects on the brain if they had experience playing contact sports (OR=1.65, 95% CI, 1.03-2.63, p<0.05). In contrast, respondents with children (OR=1.79, 95% CI, 1.47-2.17, p<0.001) and those with experience playing contact sports (OR=1.96, 95% CI, 1.63-2.36, p<0.001) were more likely to believe that concussions are treatable. Conclusions The majority of respondents reported misperceptions about concussion treatment and long-term effects. Demographic factors including experience playing contact sports influenced perceptions of both treatment and long-term effects.
