Abstract
Abstract Purpose Psychological factors influence recovery following sport-related concussion (SRC), with resilience conceptualized as a potential protective factor. Although often described as trait-like, resilience may shift following adversity, and it remains unclear how resilience may reflect responses to athletic injury in general. This study examined change in resilience scores among adolescent athletes with SRC compared to orthopedic injury (OI) during recovery. Method Adolescent athletes aged 12-18 were evaluated within 30 days of injury and three months later. Both the SRC group (n=770; Mage=14.7, SD=1.6; 49.2% female) and the OI group (n=67; Mage=14.6, SD=1.7; 52.2% female) completed the Brief Resilience Scale at both timepoints. Group-level change was examined using a 2 (Time: initial, three-months) x 2 (Group: SRC, OI) mixed-design ANOVA. Individual-level change was defined as ±1 SD from baseline. Results Mixed-design ANOVA revealed no significant main effect of Time (F(1,835)=1.83, p=.177) or Group (F(1,835)=.01, p=.911), and no Time x Group interaction (F(1,835)=.01, p=.907). Despite minimal group-level effects, notable bidirectional individual-level change was observed, with similar proportions showing significantly increased and decreased resilience scores in SRC (19.0% improved, 14.7% declined) and OI (20.9% improved, 16.4% declined). Conclusions Although resilience change was nonsignificant at the group-level, individual-level comparisons demonstrated meaningful bidirectional change across injury groups. Findings support that resilience may shift in the context of sports injury recovery and highlight the importance of examining individual variability when evaluating psychological adjustment following injury. Additional investigations of factors associated with resilience are necessary, as these may inform support strategies across sports injuries.
