Abstract
Abstract Purpose Overstating research findings in press releases is a recognized problem in scientific communication and often shapes subsequent media coverage. Although disparities in the dissemination of chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) research have been documented, the extent to which press releases overstate (“spin”) causal claims relative to scientific abstracts remains unclear. This study examined differences in causal language between CTE publications and their associated press release. Data Selection A search for the terms “chronic traumatic encephalopathy” or “CTE” was conducted on EurekAlert! and press releases with a corresponding peer-reviewed abstract were included for analysis (n=61). Data Synthesis Causal language in the press releases and corresponding scientific abstract was operationalized using a weighted lexical framework that classified text on a hierarchy of evidence strength: deterministic, conditional, associative. A novel casual intensity score was calculated for each press release and abstract, and spin was determined by comparing the mean weighted difference between the press release and abstract scores to reflect a discordance gap. Nearly 64% of press releases used more deterministic language than the associated abstract, with several demonstrating substantial deviations from the abstract. Conclusions Press releases related to CTE research frequently amplify causal language of scientific findings beyond what is accepted in the scientific literature. These findings highlight the importance of accurate and balanced communication of findings related to CTE to reduce misinterpretation and potential downstream effects on public understanding.
