Abstract
Abstract Purpose To examine how parental contact sports history and concussion knowledge/attitudes influence their child’s contact sport participation. Method A cross-sectional study exploring the concussion knowledge/attitudes of parents who previously played sports and whose children also played sports was conducted. The independent variables were 1) parental history of playing contact vs. noncontact sports and 2) the child playing contact vs. noncontact sports. Groups were compared using t-tests and Chi-square tests. A multivariable logistic regression model predicted child participation in contact sports. Results The cohort (n=806; 70.2%% women, age: M=58.4, SD=14.4) largely consisted of participants who personally never played contact sports and whose child/children never played contact sports (41.2%). Parents who had played contact sports and whose child/children also played contact sports were significantly more likely to identify as male (p<.001), less likely to have an advanced education (p=.004), and more likely to have a history of concussion (p=.005). Parents without a history of playing contact sports and whose child did not play contact sports were more likely to endorse attitudes supporting the need for stricter restrictions regarding youth participation in sports. In the multivariable logistic regression, participants who agreed that “children under 12 should not play tackle football” were significantly less likely to have a child who participated in contact sports (p=.03, OR=0.389, CI=0.164-0.912). Conclusions These results further highlight the need to explore how parental beliefs and knowledge surrounding concussion play a role in youth participation in contact sports.
