Abstract
Abstract Purpose This review sought to: 1) assess current knowledge on the relationship between nutrition and recovery following mild Traumatic Brain Injury(mTBI)/concussion and 2) provide nutritional recommendations for those recovering. Data Selection This review sought to: 1) assess current knowledge on the relationship between nutrition and recovery following mild Traumatic Brain Injury(mTBI)/concussion and 2) provide nutritional recommendations for those recovering. Data Synthesis 1,212 studies were screened with 7 meeting inclusion criteria. Nutritional supplementation was assessed in all included studies. No studies examined dietary restrictions or caloric/macronutrient consumption. There were 2 studies that examined n-acetyl cysteine (NAC) use and found that 1) the NAC group was significantly more likely to have symptom resolution by day 7 (n=81, p=.0062) and 2) there was a significant difference in mTBI symptom severity at day 7 (n=65, p=.004) and day 30 (p=.021) post mTBI. One branched chain amino acids (BCAA) study (n=38) and one docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) study (n=40) both found that supplementation led to earlier return to activity. One magnesium oxide study (n=17) found that supplementation was associated with reduced concussive symptoms 48hr following injury (p=.016). One Enzogenol study (n=60) found that supplementation was associated with a reduction in cognitive failures 6 weeks following injury. One melatonin study (n=72) found that supplementation was associated with improved sleep disturbances following injury. Conclusions Nutritional intervention was associated with a reduction in post-concussive symptoms/severity, earlier symptom resolution/return to activity, and improved sleep disturbances following mTBI/concussion.
