Abstract
Abstract Purpose Tackling and blocking in youth football are full-contact activities that, if performed incorrectly, increase the risk of serious head or neck injury. Establishing procedures to reduce injury risk, carrying out these skills during full-contact drills or games, is a priority. Prior work established the reliable rating of developmental progressions in tackling (Witeck et al., 2024) and blocking (Hoover et al., 2026). This study re-examined the tackling progressions, seeking to provide additional evidence of a reliable rating system. Method Forty tackles from youth football game video (ages 11-13) were rated using an ordinal, developmentally scaled (low, medium, high skill) observational system of four tackling components designed by subject matter experts (SMEs)‚ÄîHead/Neck position, Upper Extremity and Lower Extremity use, Center of Mass (COM/spine) positioning‚Äî. Five SME-trained research assistants rated the video clips, applying the developmental criteria. Interrater agreement of the ordinal data was calculated using Kendall’s Coefficient of Concordance (W), defined as: W<.20 poor, .20-<.40 fair, .40-<.60 moderate, .60-<.80 substantial, >.80 almost perfect. Results Interrater agreement for the five raters applying the developmental sequence criteria to the 40 tackles were: Head & Neck=0.868 (almost perfect), Upper Extremity=0.823 (almost perfect), COM=0.711 (substantial), Lower Extremity=0.731 (substantial) (all p<.001). Conclusions This study demonstrates strong interrater reliability for a novel system evaluating developmental tackling characteristics. Ratings of game footage increased ecological validity, with application to controlled drills or biomechanical motion capture. We believe application of this developmental system will better define player readiness to learn proper skills, resulting in safer and more enjoyable youth football participation.
