Abstract
Abstract Aims To evaluate clinical outcomes after inguinal hernia repair in a UK district general hospital and compare results between open and laparoscopic techniques. Methods A retrospective audit of all inguinal hernia repairs performed between April 2019 and October 2024 was conducted; pre-operative assessment and operative outcomes were audited against standards produced by NICE and the European Hernia Society. Data collected included operative approach, postoperative complications, readmissions and recurrence during the study period. Outcomes were compared between open and laparoscopic repairs. Results A total of 1028 patients underwent inguinal hernia repair with a minimum follow-up of one year. Laparoscopic repair accounted for 60% of cases. The overall recurrence rate was 3%, with lower recurrence following laparoscopic repair compared with open repair (2% vs 5%). Haematoma was the most common postoperative complication and occurred more frequently after open repair. Readmission and serious complication rates were low and comparable to, or better than, published national benchmarks. Conclusions High-volume inguinal hernia repair in a district general hospital setting is associated with low recurrence and complication rates, particularly following laparoscopic repair. These outcomes demonstrate that excellent results can be achieved outside specialist centres, supporting the delivery of hernia surgery within general surgical services across the NHS.
