Abstract
Abstract Introduction Early career introduction to the operating theatre can be an intimidating prospect. Resident doctors (RDs) at our institution reported low confidence and anxiety using surgical instrumentation and drapes. We hypothesised this reflected a lack of practical teaching and sought to audit competence and knowledge in this area with a view to addressing these concerns. Methods Junior surgical RDs underwent a 14-item multiple choice questionnaire (MCQ) on surgical equipment, adapted from the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (RACS) membership examinations. A digital survey captured demographics, experience, prior teaching, and subjective confidence using Likert scales. The audit standard was the RACS MCQ pass grade of 60%. Following first-cycle results, a practical multidisciplinary teaching session was delivered in collaboration with scrub nurse educators, incorporating demonstration of a general surgical set and patient draping. Re-audit was conducted four weeks post-intervention using the same MCQ and survey. Wilcoxon signed-rank test was used to compare pre- and post-intervention MCQ scores. Results Sixteen surgical RDs participated. 81% felt the topic was overlooked. First-cycle MCQ results did not meet the audit standard (mean 46.4%, median 35.7%, range 28.6–85.7%). Following the intervention, second-cycle MCQ results reached the standard (mean 80.4%, median 71.4%, range 71.4–100%), with a highly significant improvement in scores (p < 0.001). Conclusion This completed audit cycle identified a gap in education and demonstrated that a focused multidisciplinary intervention can improve both objective knowledge and subjective confidence. Our novel intervention has been incorporated biannually into the RD teaching programme and expanded to other hospital sites.
