Abstract
Abstract Background The objective of this article is to explore the clinical effectiveness of tranexamic acid (TXA) in patients undergoing general surgical procedures in terms of reduce haemorrhagic events Methods MEDLINE, Embase, Pubmed, Cochrane Library and other relevant electronic clinical databases were searched to find randomised, controlled trials (RCTs) reporting the perioperative use of TXA in patients undergoing general surgical operations. The extracted data was analysed using Review Manager Software based upon the principles of meta-analysis Results A total of 24 RCTs were included, recruiting more than 6000patients undergoing general surgical procedures. In the random effect model analysis, the perioperative use of TXA is associated with the reduced intra-operative (standardised mean difference, -0.69, 95 % CI [-1.85, -0.81], z = 4.13 P = 0.0001) blood loss, reduced requirements of blood transfusions (risk ratio, 0.59, 95 % CI [0.40, 0.87], z = 2.68 P = 0.007) and reduced number of major bleeding incidents(risk ratio, 0.70, 95 % CI [0.56, 0.88], z = 3.10 P = 0.002. Conclusion Perioperative use of TXA has clinically proven advantages of reducing perioperative haemorrhagic events and need of blood transfusions in patients undergoing general surgical procedures.
