Abstract
Abstract Background and Aim Endoscopy, more specifically, colonoscopy, flexible sigmoidoscopy and esophagogastroduodenoscopy is commonly performed in patients with a therapeutic intent. When done in the nonagenarian population however, there is limited data on its benefit in this regard often due to frailty and the patient's comorbid state (Miyanaga et al., 2018) (Razavi et al., 2014). This study analysis the therapeutic outcome of carrying out these interventions in patients who are above 90 years of age. Methods We conducted a retrospective study to explore the therapeutic yield of these procedures done in a cohort of patients aged between 90 and 94 in our hospital. Interventions such as argon plasma coagulation, NG or NJ tube insertion, upper and lower gastro intestinal stenting, decompression of volvulus, haemostasis and polypectomies were taken into account in this study. Results The analysis revealed that around 58% of the patients undergoing these endoscopies had a successful therapeutic intervention performed. Furthermore, we found that 34.6 % of the patients who underwent a therapeutic endoscopic intervention were deceased during follow up. Conclusion These findings suggest a notable benefit in performing these procedures in this age group with a therapeutic perspective. It signifies a considerable therapeutic advantage of endoscopy in nonagenarians even after percentage mortality is accounted for.
