Abstract
Abstract Objectives The objective of this study is a systematically analyzed, published randomized controlled trials (RCTs), evaluating the efficacy of bone marrow/adipose tissue derived stem cell therapy in the management of peri-anal fistula resulting from Crohn’s disease and cryptoglandular disease. Methods The relevant RCTs were selected from standard medical literature database and analyzed by using the principals of meta-analysis. Statistical analysis was performed using RevMan software version 5.5. Results Eleven RCTs on 857 patients undergoing stem cell therapy for peri-anal fistula were retrieved from electronic database searches. In the random effect of random analysis the incidence of adverse events [risk ratio - 1.03, 95% CI (0.88, 1.21), Z=0.39, P = 0.70], are statistically similar compared to controlled group. The healing rate [risk ratio - 1.42, 95% CI (1.02, 1.97), Z=2.10, P = 0.04] was found higher compared to controlled group. However, there was a significant heterogeneity (Tau2 =0.16, Chi2 = 44.26, df= 10, p=0.00001, I2= 77%) among studies Conclusion Based upon findings of current meta-analysis, bone marrow/adipose tissue derived stem cell therapy has demonstrated better outcome to treat perianal fistula.
