Abstract
Abstract Aim Early-career emergency department (ED) clinicians are frequently required to perform surgical tasks, yet exposure to structured teaching during postgraduate training is limited. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of a focused, skills-based workshop on junior ED doctors’ confidence in performing core surgical procedures. Methods A pre- and post-intervention survey was conducted among ED resident doctors participating in a basic surgical skills course. The workshop covered basic surgical skills commonly encountered in ED using simulation models. Participants completed anonymised questionnaires before and after the workshop, rating their confidence for each skill using a 5-point Likert scale (1 = not confident, 5 = very confident). Descriptive statistics were used to compare pre- and post-training scores. Results A total of 51 participants completed the surveys. Baseline confidence across all domains was modest. Following the workshop, mean Likert scores improved for all skills assessed: safe infiltration of local anaesthetic (2.5 vs 3.5), choosing appropriate suture material (2.6 vs 3.7), performing simple interrupted sutures (2.3 vs 4.0), performing continuous sutures (2.3 vs 3.6), using clips/staples/glue (2.5 vs 3.7), performing hand ties and instrument ties (2.4 vs 3.7), managing wound edge alignment and tension (2.6 vs 3.8), and applying these skills in clinical practice (2.3 vs 3.8). Conclusions A short, structured surgical skills workshop significantly increased resident ED doctors’ self-reported confidence across several basic surgical skills. These findings support the integration of focused, practical skills training into early ED education to enhance doctor skillset and patient care.
