Abstract
Abstract Aim Incision & drainage of abscess is one of the most common surgical procedure in General surgery department. The aim of the study is to find out the need for routine pus swabs for culture & sensitivity in management of abscess drainage. Method This is a retrospective study done in General Surgery department which includes 53 patients. We extracted the demographics from hospital records & used it to review the peri-operative management of abscess with antibiotics & microbiology reports. Results 53 patients were included in the study. Routine pus swabs were sent for 42 patients of which 14 had no growth & 28 had different microbial growth. An average of 6 days was taken for the cultures to be reported & a maximum of 15 days to get the final report. Of this, 81% of culture reports were not reviewed by the team & all of them discharged before culture reports & continued on same plan. Culture reports were reviewed in 19% of patients of which 5.7% of patients had change in antibiotics. Only 7.69% of patients did not receive post op antibiotics. The immediate recurrence was less than 1% with no post op complications, wound complications or fistula for the followed up period of time. A p value of 1 indicates that sending routine pus swabs didnot affect outcomes in this cohort of patients. Conclusion Routine swabbing for all abscess patients does not seem to have any benefits unless they are severely immunocompromised, recurrent perianal sepsis, extensive necrosis or presenting with systemic sepsis but further Randomised studies needed to strengthen the study.
