Abstract
Abstract Aims To identify areas to develop to improve high output stoma (HOS) management following our low compliance in our recent audit. To assess the understanding and confidence of HOS management in the junior members of the general surgical team. Method A 27-question questionnaire was dispersed to all junior doctors of the surgical team to collect data on the respondent's job title, self-reported confidence in the management and monitoring of HOS, as well as increasing loperamide doses on a 5-point Likert scale (1-Not confident and 5-Very confident). The questionnaire was performed in December 2025. Data was analysed in Microsoft Excel. Results 11/32 (34.3%) responded from foundation year one to senior house officer. DomainModal Confidence ScoreManaging HOS3Increasing Loperamide3Monitoring HOS patients3 6/11 (55.5%) did not know a concerning pH level on proton pump inhibitor initiation. 5/11 (45.5%) would restrict oral fluid to 1001-1500ml. 3/11 (27.3%) would routinely check urinary sodium in HOS. 2/11 (18.2%) correctly identified urinary sodium levels to suggest effective rehydration therapy 0/11 (0%) identified the correct initial nor daily blood tests indicated in HOS. 9/11 (81.8%) would like further education on HOS with 10/11 (90.9%) preferring virtual. 7/11 6/11 (54.5%) would prefer group-based teaching or case-based discussion. Conclusion Most respondents reported neutral confidence in managing HOS. This is significant as junior doctors are responsible for ordering investigations and enacting HOS management plans. Despite the low response rate, this highlights areas for potential education and methods to apply to improve our next audit.
