Abstract
Abstract Aim The objective of this study is to check the efficacy of use of preoperative probiotics/synbiotics in reducing the surgical site infection in patients undergoing colorectal resection Methods Standard medical electronic databases were searched to find relevant randomised controlled trials by using the principles of meta-analysis. Statistical analysis was performed using RevMan software version 5.4. Results Twenty-four RCTs on 2155 patients undergoing colorectal resections, divided into two groups (those receiving probiotics/symbiotic pre-operatively and those receiving placebo/standard care). In the random effects random analysis, the use of preoperative probiotics/symbiotics is associated with reduced risk of surgical site infection [odds ratio 0.61 (95% CI 0.40, 0.95), Z=2.17, P= 0.03]. However, there was statistically significant heterogeneity (Tau=0.48, Chi= 43.5, df=22 (P=0.004)) among included randomised controlled trials. Conclusion Based upon the findings of the current meta-analysis, the use of preoperative probiotics/symbiotics in patients undergoing colorectal resection seems to have clinical advantage of lower risk of surgical site infection.
