Abstract
Abstract Aims The aim of this study is to systematically analyze published comparative studies, including randomized controlled trials and comparative studies, evaluating the efficacy of robotic ventral mesh rectopexy in the management of rectal prolapse compared to laparoscopic ventral mesh rectopexy. Methods Relevant studies were selected from standard electronic medical databases and analyzed using the principles of meta-analysis. Statistical analysis was performed using RevMan software version 5.5. Results Eight comparative studies involving 2165 patients undergoing rectopexy were retrieved from electronic database searches. In the random-effects analysis, there were no statistically significant differences between the robotic and laparoscopic groups regarding overall complications, recurrence rates, or operative time. However, the length of hospital stay was found to be significantly shorter in the robotic group [Mean Difference -0.35, 95% CI (-0.63, -0.06), Z=2.40, P = 0.02] as well as intra-operative blood loss [Mean Difference -0.28, 95% CI (-0.47, -0.08), Z= 2.77, P= 0.006]. Conclusion Based on the findings of the current meta-analysis, Robotic and Laparoscopic Ventral Mesh Rectopexy are comparable in terms of safety and efficacy, with similar complication and recurrence rates. While the robotic approach is associated with a statistically significant reduction in hospital stay and intra-operative blood loss, the operative time remains similar between the two techniques.
