Abstract
This chapter examines Russia's cultural golden age during the early nineteenth century, highlighting the rise of the intelligentsia, the expansion of education, and the development of science, scholarship, and historical writing under imperial authority. It analyses literary achievements through the works of Alexander Pushkin, Mikhail Lermontov, Nikolai Gogol, Taras Shevchenko, and other writers shaping Russian realism, Romanticism, and debates over empire, identity, and society. The chapter also explores architecture, painting, and music, stressing the influence of neoclassicism, Romanticism, and nationalism on artistic expression and cultural institutions. It further contrasts Slavophile and Westernizer thought, examining competing views on autocracy, religion, individual dignity, reform, and Russia's historical mission. Finally, the chapter explains how intellectual criticism, movements, and demands for social transformation encouraged the emergence of the Russian intelligentsia and revolutionary consciousness.
