Abstract
This chapter examines how eighteenth-century Russia transformed elite culture through Western education, publishing, sociability, and continuing religious influence under Peter the Great and Catherine the Great. It explains how schools, academies, universities, journals, and women's education expanded intellectual life while preserving strong links between Enlightenment ideas and Orthodox morality. The chapter analyses scientific development through Mikhail Lomonosov's achievements, state-sponsored expeditions, and growing interest in geography, economics, natural science, and exploration. It analyses major literary and artistic developments, including in the areas of drama, sentimentalism, architecture, theatre, journalism, and debates concerning Westernization and Russian cultural identity. Finally, the chapter traces the emergence of a critical intelligentsia through Freemasonry, satire, social criticism, and condemnation of serfdom that increasingly challenged autocracy and inspired later revolutionary thought among educated Russians.
