Abstract
This chapter examines Russian cultural and intellectual life between the Great Reforms and the First World War, emphasising educational expansion, scientific achievement, and rising literacy despite conservatism and social inequality. It analyses major literary figures, including Fyodor Dostoevsky, Leo Tolstoy, and Anton Chekhov, while also exploring realism, modernism, music, visual art, and silver age experimentation. The chapter evaluates nihilism, populism, Marxism, liberalism, conservatism, nationalism, and religious revivalism alongside debates concerning empire, spirituality, and identity. It further investigates women's emancipation, changing gender relations, and the growth of popular culture amid moral idealism, social conflict, and modern consumerism. Finally, the chapter portrays late imperial Russia as a society that experienced extraordinary cultural creativity while simultaneously confronting ideological division, uncertainty, and revolutionary expectation before 1917.
