Abstract
This chapter examines how Michael Romanov stabilized Muscovy after the Time of Troubles by suppressing rivals, restoring order, negotiating costly peace with Sweden and Poland, and confronting severe fiscal weakness. It shows how Alexis Romanov faced continuing crises, enacted the Ulozhenie, advanced Nikon's church reforms, and pursued selective Western engagement while confronting corruption and urban unrest. The chapter traces the salt riot, copper coin riot, and Stenka Razin rebellion as responses to taxation, serfdom, and expanding state control. It also charts imperial growth through Siberian conquest, fur tribute, frontier settlement, and flexible governance while contrasting Muscovite expansion with Ukrainian Cossack resistance. Finally, the chapter analyses Khmelnytsky's revolt, the Pereiaslav agreement, Ukraine's partition, and the violent, contested legacies shaping Russian, Ukrainian, and Jewish historical memory.
