Abstract
This chapter examines Russia's political and social transformation after Peter the Great, highlighting how female rulers, palace coups, and noble influence reshaped autocracy between 1725 and 1762. Catherine I, Peter II, Anne, and Ivan VI confronted succession disputes, aristocratic manipulation, foreign influence, and unstable governance while guards' regiments repeatedly decided political authority. The chapter shows how Empress Elizabeth strengthened administration, promoted culture, expanded Russia's international influence, and cultivated enlightened images of monarchy, whereas Peter III alienated elites through his admiration for Prussia and disruptive domestic reforms. The chapter also explains the growing privileges of the gentry, the abolition of compulsory service, and the worsening oppression of serfs under expanding noble control. Finally, the chapter analyses Russia's alliances, wars, and diplomatic strategies, emphasising military development and increasing participation in European affairs during the eighteenth century's political transformation.
