Abstract
This chapter examines Russian society after communism by tracing economic inequality, social dislocation, political uncertainty, and cultural transformation following the collapse of Soviet rule. It analyses wealth creation, persistent poverty, organised crime, demographic decline, and economic recovery while explaining how ordinary citizens now pursue stability, survival, entrepreneurship, and opportunity. The chapter explores nationalism, democracy, religion, gender politics, and youth culture, showing how patriotic conservatism increasingly shapes public values, historical memory, and national identity. It also evaluates literature, cinema, television, visual art, and political performance art, emphasising creative freedom, moral uncertainty, nostalgia, censorship, and resistance to authoritarian cultural policies. Finally, the chapter argues that Russians now confront instability, modernization, spirituality, and state power while seeking social normalcy, national cohesion, material security, and meaningful cultural expression in everyday life.
